Descripción
The dataset comprises camera trap data from three study areas in Denmark. The dataset consists of data collected using a modified Mostela camera trapping device as well as externally placed camera traps. The data was collected between June 2021 and January 2023. The data focuses on small mustelids, but all animal captures are included. The data is divided in three projects named: DataElusiveMustelids, DataGribskovExternal and DataLureElusiveMustelids.
Registros

The dataset was used for the scientific paper Elusive mustelids – 18 months in the search of near threatened stoat (Mustela erminea) and weasel (M. nivalis) reveals low captures available at Ecology and Evolution. The project aimed at obtaining knowledge on stoats and weasels at three different study areas in Northern Zealand, Denmark. The project was divided in three sub-projects where we 1) tested a modified version of the novel camera trapping device the Mostela, 2) deployed external cameras facing the novel camera trapping device and 3) tested different commercial scent-based lures for their effectiveness in attracting mustelids in a Danish content.

Fuentes de Financiación | This project was funded by a research grant to Rasmus Worsøe Havmøller from 15. Juni Fonden (No. 2023-0291). |
Descripción del área de estudio | The project was performed in three different study areas. Overby Lyng which is a summerhouse area Strødam which is a scientific nature reserve characterised by forested areas and some open, grass-dominated areas Gribskov which is a large forest in Danish context and is characterised by forested and open natural areas, as well as a high amount of visitors. |
Descripción del diseño | See methods section of Elusive mustelids – 18 months in the search of near threatened stoat (Mustela erminea) and weasel (M. nivalis) reveals low captures to get an overview of the camera trapping device and thorough description of the study design. |
Métodos de muestreo
Cameras were set up covering the three study areas, and placed in differing microhabitats. Photos were retrieved periodically throughout the study period, at which times the batteries were changed if needed. When testing scent-based lures these were changed with a 2-week period of deployment switching at random between field sites.
Área de Estudio | The cameras were deployed at varying lengths and times from 2021-06-10 until 2023-01-23. |

Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:
- We deployed three different types of cameras during this project. They were Cuddeback Ambush, Cuddeback G-5086 and Cuddeback G-5048. Upon retrieval of photos from the field all photos were manually annotated to species level. Data was analysed and results were presented and discussed in the paper Elusive mustelids – 18 months in the search of near threatened stoat (Mustela erminea) and weasel (M. nivalis) reveals low captures.
