Description
This dataset contains the data foundation for the Master Thesis by Kimmie Møenbo Jensen 2017: The Danish Lace-bugs (family Tingidae) and Piesmatidae - Occurrence, temporal trends and potential species. Thesis abstract: Tingidae and Piesmatidae are small families of Heteropterans with a body length varying between 1.5-5 mm. A total of 27 species of Tingidae and 4 species of Piesmatidae are belonging to the Danish fauna, and both families are recognised by lace-like networks of cells, which is especially expressed in species of Tingidae. The species in these families are all host specific phytophagous and can in some cases act as pests. Changes have developed in these families since the first identification key of Danish Tingidae and Piesmatidae from 1912. Furthermore, the occurrence of the Danish species of these families have never been investigated. Thereby the aim of this project is to examine changes within these families through construction of an updated identification key, species descriptions and creation of occurrence maps. Moreover, the georeferencing information will be provided to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility to enrich their database information. In addition this work will describe the potential species for Denmark. All of above goals have been reached through registration and observation of 3528 adult specimens that primarily are from the collections at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and at the Natural History Museum of Aarhus. Observation of the morphology has solely been based on outer characteristics as these are sufficient for correct identification of these families. In addition to own observations the key builds upon comparison of characteristics from other identification keys. GPS-coordinates and a buffer zone have been found for all the specimens so that useful occurrence maps could be made for the distinct species in Denmark. Three new species have been registered within the last two years. These species includes Dictyla humuli, Stephanitis takeyai and Tingis crispata. Furthermore, the potential Danish species Physatocheila smreczynskii may have been discovered in Denmark, but because of similarities with Physatocheila costata it is questionable whether it can be included in the Danish fauna or not. Moreover, it has been discovered that Parapiesma variabile is not a Danish species as previously assumed.
