Descripción
* It should be noted that this dataset only contains specimen NOT vouchered in the Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHMD) and Natural History Museum Aarhus (NHMA), as these are published separately through the institution collection management system (Specify). The dataset was made to support the paper, The Philonthus rove beetles (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) in the online Danish Beetle Bank published in Entomologiske Meddelelser. It contains distribution data of the Danish Philonthus largely based on recorded specimens from the Danish Beetle Catalog and its additions (Hansen, 1996; Hansen et al., 1998; Hansen et al., 1999; Hansen et al., 2000; Pedersen et al., 2001; Jørum et al. 2002; Pedersen & Runge, 2003; Pedersen et al., 2004; Pedersen & Vagtholm-Jensen, 2005; Jørum et al. 2006; Pedersen et al., 2008; Pedersen et al., 2010; Hansen et al., 2012; Hansen & Jørum, 2014; Hansen & Jørum, 2017; Pedersen, Hansen & Hansen, unpublished). The Danish Beetle Catalog registers occurrences in 11 zoogeographic regions based on Enghoff & Nielsen (1977). These include North West Jutland (NWJ), North East Jutland (NEJ), West Jutland (WJ), East Jutland (EJ), South Jutland (SJ), Funen (F), North West Zealand (NWZ), North East Zealand (NEZ), South Zealand (SZ), Lolland, Falster and Møn (LFM), and Bornholm (B). For each region a specimen has been recorded with precise locality and collecting data, these have been georeferenced and included as a GBIF occurrence dataset here. Furthermore, rare species were checked in the two national species databases, the Arter.dk and Naturbasen for additional records that could be verified.
Registros

Philonthus is a megadiverse genus represented by 49 species in the Danish fauna, with another three species expected to occur in the region in the near future due to range expansion. Philonthus are found in a large variety of mainly ephemeral habitats, including animal feces, plant debris, compost piles, fungi, carrion, and in washed up debris along coasts, streams and lakes. Here we present an illustrated identification key and annotated list of both currently known and expected species of Philonthus in Denmark extracted from the more interactive version created and launched by us at the Danish Beetle Bank (www.billebank.dk). All these contributions are based on specimens from the entomology collection at the Natural History Museum of Denmark which is the most complete source on Danish beetle fauna. We also present a georeferenced occurrence dataset for Philonthus in Denmark based on the Danish Beetle Catalog and a thorough literature review. This dataset is uploaded to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), and thus integrated into the Danish national species portal Arter.dk. This paper is a guide to all these online resources, as well as a version for those who prefer such information in the traditional printed form. Our hope is that this contribution will ease up species identification and future study of Philonthus in Denmark and make the Danish Beetle Bank a useful and practical resource for enthusiasts and professionals alike.
